Hampshire, England, Poised to Break Ukulele Guinness World Record?

Uke history may soon be made in Hampshire, England.

It looks like the Hampshire Music Service is poised to break the current world record for the largest group performance on the ukulele. The current mark, as tallied by the Guinness Book of World Records, was set in Yokohama, Japan in 2012, but Hampshire could soon replace Yokohama in the fabled book. With Hampshire’s attempt set for July 18, the organization has extended a deadline for entering the record attempt to July 11 in the hopes that enough people will sign up to topple the old record.

We are now hovering just over the 2,100 mark for ukulele players with over 3500 people attending! We need to beat the current title held by Japan of 2,134 participants, so EVERY player counts; your country needs YOU!

A recent attempt to break the current mark in Los Angeles came up well short, drawing just 1,200 strummers, and the Cairns Ukulele Festival in Australia also failed to displace Yokohama.

BBC presenter Justin Flecther (seen above) will lead the latest attempt to break the record at the Southampton Football Stadium.
