Despite a valiant and jovial effort to break the world record for the largest live ukulele ensemble, the Los Angeles Ukulele Expo came up well short of etching its name in the Guinness Book.

An estimated 1,000 ukulele players turned up to try and make history, CBS Los Angeles reported, far short of the 2,135 players needed displace Yokohama, Japan as the epicenter of group ukulele strumming.

The quest to best Japan now moves on to Hampshire, England, where the Hampshire County Council’s Music Service will make a run at the record on July 18.
