Q & A With Heidi Swedberg:
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself; how did you get started on your artistic journey?
A: I have been formally teaching ukulele to kids and adults for about 12 years, however I remember teaching my friends when I was about 10 years old. We would “borrow” my sister’s ukuleles and hide in my room, strumming songs together. Because we didn’t have a chord book or the internet we would experiment and make up chords. I remember the day I invented the Em and Am chords for “Puff The Magic Dragon”. I should have copyrighted them- I would be a millionaire by now!
Q: What inspires your creativity? Any particular artists you admire?

A: I see and hear inspiration everywhere! The sounds of construction, the bloom of a tree… I think that is why I gravitate towards folk music from all cultures. It has a way of reflecting the world around us, being both specific and universal at the same time.
Q: Do you play an instrument? What music and musicians brighten your day?
A: Besides the ukulele I like to dabble. Simple instruments, whatever I can get my hands on- alto recorder, glockenspiel, toy accordion, percussion…I love to listen to music made by friends. Live or recorded, I gravitate to work by people I know more than big commercial efforts. And jazz. I love jazz. All jazz.
Q: What makes your shop and designs unique and special?
A: I am both practical and fanciful, and my work reflects this. Every song we record or teach needs to be equally fun and important. I would never want a song stuck in your head if it is not worthy of the real estate, nor would I wish a great song to be dismissed as dull.

Q: Did we miss anything you’d like to mention?
A: I am thrilled to collaborate with some amazing artists: the brilliance of Daniel Ward’s music and El Rey’s drawings really shine in the coloring book. (Make sure you DOWNLOAD THE RECORDINGS –FREE with the book so you can hear Daniel!)
